On December 19, 1972, the Apollo 17 command module splashed down in the Pacific Ocean. It marked the end of the Apollo program. Astronaut Gene Cernan was the last man to walk on the lunar surface. Before he climbed the ladder to leave, he traced his daughter's initials, "TDC," into the moon dust.
